My Final Thing!

Wow! I'm finally done.
My last blog post was all about Creative Commons.
Although, I have had fun with all of the projects in this class. I must say, I'm glad to finally be COMPLETED!! Don't get me wrong, I learned a lot, and now I have SO many tools and resources to help me when I am an educator!

My favorite discovery was the Mosaic Maker. I just thought this was the neatest tool! All of the tools were great, but this was my favorite because I know I will be able to show my creativity in so many ways with it!.
This program has affected my lifelong learning goals by giving me to tools to initiate research on any and every thing on my own. I have the tools to look up and create any and everything!
I really didn't expect to get so much out of this blog. I have learned about so many tools and can't wait to incorporate them into my classroom. Like I said in a previous blog, I have never been a "writer" so this whole process has been such a journey to me. I'm really considering writing a blog to document my teaching experience and life in general. I guess what I'm saying is that I thought I would never like doing this, but apparently, I have a lot to talk about!!
I think this concept is great. If I could change one thing, it would probably be combining some Things into one Thing.. For example, there were a bunch of Thing's on organization.. I think maybe they could have been combined, with all resources still there, of course. But maybe combine them to do them all at the same time.
Seriously, I plan on incorporating almost all of these things into my teaching practice. I know Technology is always changing, so I know by the time I start teaching, there will be even more fun and innovative things to incorporate into the classroom.
I plan on keeping up with Web 2.0 by reading blogs and learning about new innovations online!!

Overall, this was great. The entire class was A LOT of good, helpful, and most importantly useful tools that I plan on incorporating into teaching. I can't wait!!
It's been great guys! But it's time to go!!!!
For now, at least!! :)

Thing 23.

My last thing!!! Well, almost... Technically, I have one more, but who's counting?
So in my last thing, we really wrapped up the organization section!! LiveBinders helped me organize all links, activities, articles, and websites all into one place!
In this last blog, we will talk about Creative Commons.
Copyright is important. And from watching the Creative Commons video, I learned that Copyright licenses are free and really easy to set up, making it clear who can use your works!

For my example of someone else's 23 things, I just googled 23 things for teachers. The first link that popped up was this one: http://resa-23things.blogspot.com

And look what else I found!!

A Creative Commons licensing logo!!!

I will use Creative Commons to share projects, presentations, or other works I have created. I want people to be inspired by my creativity! And after all, sharing is caring, right?!

Thing 22.

So... Thing 21 was all about making videos, which was a lot of fun!! In this blog post, we will do more organization!! Who doesn't love more tips on being organized?! I swear half of my pins on Pinterest are organization tips for around the home!! I can't get enough of it.

For this blog post, we were to set up a LivBinders account. This site is great for putting links for different resources all in one place. I created binders relating to SPED. The one I am going to share with you is my ELL binder. However, I created binders for Autism and Cerebral Palsy as well. I know as a special education teacher, I will come across students with all types of disabilities. So I wanted to be educated in all disabilities, and have my links and resources all in one area.

http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=1066585

In my ELL binder, I placed resources on games, articles, and teaching tips.
I can use LiveBinder in the classroom by giving students the link to the binder so they can look at a variety of games to learn English!

Thing 21.

Hi!
In my last blog post, I discussed Youtube, and how it could be incorporated into the classroom. I'm excited to share this blog post with you all about Animoto!

So for my video, I created a video using pictures that were taken at my brother's wedding. You will see pictures of my family and my sister in law's family. I'll explain the music from the video after you watch  it!!

Wedding fun!

So, I chose the song Maple Leaf Rag... The story behind that is that I grew up playing piano, and I still do. But the Maple Leaf Rag was my all-time favorite song to play, and my brother always made me play it when I had to practice.
Overall, I had a pretty good experience with Animoto. This site was simple to use and figure out. I think this could be a great tool for teachers to re-cap the school year by showing a video on the last day of class. Students would watch the video and remember all the projects and fun they had throughout the year.

Thing 20.

Hey guys!
Thing 19 wrapped up our social media section, which I did enjoy, simply because I'm a big fan of social media. Only a few more Things left, and my blogging journey will end... Until I decide to start my own blog! :p

In this Thing, our main topic is Youtube!! Who doesn't love Youtube?! We all watch hilarious videos on here, but who knew we could use it for education purposes!! Well, probably all of us because at some point in our college education, we have inserted a link to a Youtube video for a Powerpoint presentation for some class! But in this blog post, I will further discuss other findings of Youtube.

I chose this video of Including Samuel because it is such a good video about inclusion of special needs children in regular ed classes. If you get a chance, watch it! It's only ten minutes, but it's worth the time if you have it!

Of the tools that I explored, I chose to blog about Vine!! Vine is a whole new trend about making short clips of videos and posting them to share. In an educational setting, you could post videos of student presentations or group work, or even clips of videos that you watch in class. Students could refer to videos for information!

Thing 19.

So, in Thing 18, I discussed Twitter, and how it could be incorporated into education. I've had a Twitter account since I was probably 19, but I never really used it. Luckily, I still remembered my username and password so I could search educational hashtags for Thing 18.
In this Thing, I will discuss other social networking sites for teachers.

One networking site that I really enjoy is LinkedIn. I think this is a great site for working professionals. It is a great way to network, not with just educators, but anyone you come in contact with. LinkedIn is a great way to get recommendations from people or just to connect with other professionals. I will definitely become a part of LinkedIn, in order to network with other professionals.
Social media is a great tool for everyone. There are many benefits to having connections through social media. Not to mention, we can all learn from each other when we're all connected!

Thing 18.

Hello all..
In my last blog post, I discussed social bookmarking, which is great and all. But since I plan on working with elementary school children, I don't see a huge demand for it in my classroom.
In this blog post, I will discuss Twitter, and how it can be incorporated into education.

Here's the link to my Twitter account:
https://twitter.com/LCisBA

In my hashtag quest, I found twitter accounts and posts on education and special education. I was surprised to find a lot of resources for special needs educators. There are educational hashtags for everything!! Homeschooling, distance learning, SPED, middle school, high school, anything really!!

I think educators need to understand social media because it is such a big part of our lives now. Social media helps us connect with friends, family, and colleagues. We can learn from each other, and grow from each other, by sharing different links, articles, or posts.
From Twitter, I gained insight on educational hashtags. I knew anything could be hash-tagged, but I never thought to search different educational hashtags.
Twitter could be applied in the classroom. But, like I said before, since I am teaching elementary special education, I don't see a great need for my students to use Twitter.

Thing 17.

Now that we're all organized, we can breathe a little and focus on what we need to focus on... Education!
In this blog post, I will talk about social bookmarking. This is a topic, somewhat new to me. so it was interesting to learn about social bookmarking. I know about hashtags from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. But, using hashtags to categorize websites is something new to me.
After I joined Delicious, I searched "educational technology." One of the first links that came up was Technology Integration Matrix. Some of the tags were: technology, education, web 2.0, and resources. I didn't see any comments. However, there were a good amount of tags.

Social bookmarking could be used in a classroom. However, since I plan on working with children, I don't foresee a HUGE need for social bookmarking for children with special needs in elementary school. Maybe later in the future, but not now, at least for me.

Thing 16.

In Thing 15, I discussed wiki and how to use it, and how it could be helpful in the classroom. It's funny how all through high school, every teacher was like "Wikipedia is the devil" and now, I think teachers are realizing that Wikipedia can be a good tool, you just have to be careful about what's posted on there because anyone can post ANYTHING!
In this blog post, we will be getting ORGANIZED! Just to touch on organization, I love organization. It makes life so much easier when things are in order.

Look how awesome uStart is!!
I was able to add Google Drive and the news to my startup page. And guess what?! An RSS link!! Everything is literally in one place!!! I can even get Twitter updates! This will be my permanent home page as soon as I publish this blog!
I like UpTo's calendar. It's a great way to share your calendar with friends and family. You can organize events and have everything right there in front of you. Plus, you can sync it with your Google account AND Facebook! Now, everything is on your smartphone too!!

The PDFConverter is a great tool. Not everyone has Microsoft Office on their computer, but every computer can read a PDF file. This could be great for students that do not have Microsoft Office on their home computer, but they need to send me something electronically.

Life is great when things are organized. I plan on recommending every tool I've encountered on here. I think others could definitely benefit by being organized!! :)

Thing 15.

So many tools!!!!! I'm learning so much about online tools that I can use when I go into the classroom. I know everyone else is too!! I had no idea there was access to so much online. But, now I know, and I have full intention on utilizing every tool I have available to me.

In the APSU Sandbox Wiki, I chose to add my picture that I used from the Mosaic Maker. I just really love that tool!! This was fairly easy for me. You just had to register for an account and then join the workplace and then edit whatever you want!

This could be a good tool for the classroom because kids could add all kinds of information they find to contribute to class discussion, or maybe even group work. The downside would be that kids might delete other children's work, maybe on accident or on purpose. But that's the only problem I could foresee.

Thing 14.

Time to learn about more online tools!! In my last blog post, I talked about Google Drive and Zoho, and all they have to offer. In this blog, I will discuss two different online tools to create flow charts and mind maps!!

I chose Gliffy to create flowcharts. When setting up a flow chart, Gliffy gave me a tutorial on how to add shapes, lines, and text! Gliffy was very simple to learn, and very easy to customize.
The other tool I chose was bubble.us to create a mind map. Mind maps are great for jotting down ideas, without having to make them flow. It's a great way to brainstorm. This tool was easy to maneuver and easy to customize, similar to Gliffy.

These two tools could be used by teachers and students. Students could use the mind mapping tool to brainstorm ideas. Students could work alone, or in groups. As an educator, I could use Gliffy to create flowcharts to help guide my students on a topic.

Thing 13.

It's all about Google now!! In my last blog post, I talked about different tools in Google. Did you know that Google also has Google Drive?! It's very, very similar to Microsoft Office, offering many of the same features, for FREE, and without worry of having to purchase new software every time a new version of Microsoft comes out.

Here's a link to a google document. Check it out!
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Z5fnLTiDgr_wAxQtXsQK_US1zh3EKYAJ5d866w4S4p8/pub

Here's a link to a drawing I made. It's pretty simple.. But what's great is... I could do the same thing in Microsoft Word.

https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1v1nlbZEdQmiY8XVl9jXdP0gbxVbGxlgX_LSMkJ4-7rI/pub?w=960&h=720

Students could work collaboratively in Google Drive, because one could publish a document, other students could view the document, and send feedback, and work together to make a complete document.

I really am a fan of Google Drive. However, Zoho is pretty awesome too! It offers everything from Google Drive and Microsoft Office, but MORE!! Zoho is designed for working professionals. It offers a lot of business software, as well as Word Documents, Presentations, and Spreadsheets.
Anything that costs me NOTHING, makes me a big fan. Knowing that programs like Zoho and Google Drive are out there. I wonder why people even purchase softwares like Microsoft Office anymore! We all need to save a dollar!!

Thing 12.

In Thing 11, I wrapped up the section about RSS and how teachers, or anyone really can use RSS to help make life a little bit more simple.
In this blog post, I get the opportunity to explore Google!!

In this Discovery Exercise, I decided to explore Google Translate and Google Plus Photos.
Google Translate comes in handy for me a lot. I have half of my family in Korea. And although I can speak, write, and understand a lot of Korean. There's still  a lot that I have to learn. Google translate is great because I can use it to translate email's from family members when I don't know what is trying to be said. As with any translator, it's not perfect, and the English translation won't be perfect, but it's good enough to let me know what family members are trying to tell me!
Google Plus Photos is awesome because it has a bunch of photo editing tools that can make your photos look better, and maybe even more professional! It's also nice, because it always backs up your photos, so in case your computer crashes or you lose your memory card, Google Plus Photos already has your images saved.

Google Translate can be used educationally for ELL students. Often times, there are language barriers, and Google is here to help us overcome those barriers!

Thing 11.

Hello all!
In Thing 10, I discussed RSS feeds and MyFeedly. I may have jumped the gun when I added CNN to MyFeedly. Oops! But I will tie it in to this blog post anyways. :)

Of all the search engines to find blogs, I found all of them to be very self-explanitory. I think Google blog search was the easiest. When I typed in APSU 23 things, SO many blogs came up for this class. I guess this must be a popular course! (That, or required!!) Nonetheless, it was very easy to find other blogs that have been done on APSU 23 things.
Well... In my travels of finding other feeds, like I said before, I found CNN along with other news feeds. I don't know why, but I'm such a big fan of the news. In addition to news blogs, I found blogs of some friends that do photography, which is also pretty cool to me.

Thing 10.

In my last blog, I had a great time creating meme's. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed making them!!
In this blogpost, I will discuss RSS.

RSS is really new to me. Like I said before, I was never really into blogs and things of that sort. However, while I was finding different feeds to subscribe to, I came across some really good ones! In addition to the feeds that were suggested to us, I found that CNN had a feed! I'm a freak about news, so that was really exciting to me! I like that RSS and newsreaders have everything in one place so you can see what's new all the time. The first video that we watched explained it really well.. Why go to ten different sites, when you can have those SAME sights come right to you, in one place!! No more wasting time! And we all know, time is precious!!

I could use this technology as a teacher and in my personal life. If I had my students create a blog, I could have them to subscribe to each other, and they could see everyone's new blogs posts all in one place. In my personal life, I could find more sites to add to My Feedly! I really am excited about having CNN on there!! (Even though I already have the app where I get push notifications!!)

Teachers can use RSS to find new ideas from other teachers across the country! Like I said before, it's all convenient because everything is in one place! All new ideas and information are in the same spot, as long as you create it!

Thing 9.

In my last blog, I discussed photo-sharing with Flikr, and I shared with you all my SPED mosaic image!! But this blog, is WAY more fun!!

In this blogpost, I will share with you some images from images generators that I created! I used ImageChef. They make all kinds of those meme's on there!! Here's a couple of the meme's I created. Hope you enjoy!

These image generators might be a fun way to get the attention of students in class. If these meme's stay popular, then kids will LOVE these things, as long as you keep a sense of humor in mind. Kids (and adults too) love these meme's. Using meme's could be a great way to introduce a lesson or specific skill to your class.

If you get a chance, check out ImageChef!! You'll love it, and have a blast while creating your own meme's!

Thing 8.

In my last blog post, I talked about exploring Flikr, and how great of a tool Flikr is for photosharing.
Thanks to Flikr, I was able to finish this blog post as well!!

I used the Mosaic Maker to create the word SPED. As you all know, I plan on teaching special education after I graduate. I could use Mosaic Maker and Flikr to help children find letters and create words with the letters that we find!! Mosaic Maker was very easy to use. All I had to do was choose the size of my picture, and then upload the images. If you like Mosaic Maker to your Flikr account, uploading photos is a breeze!!
My personal feelings on photo-sharing are PRO photo-sharing. Photo-sharing is great! After all, sharing is caring, right?! There's no need to be stingy with all your work and pictures! Let others be inspired by your creativity, as long as it's done in a proper way. Hope you all enjoyed working with these mash-ups as much as I did! :)

Thing 7.

Hello all!
So in my last blog, I went on and on about Pinterest. Now, we are in a new section, and we get to have some photo fun.

While looking through Flikr, I decided to search good ole Clarksville, TN. I came across this picture...

Blackhorse Pub... My favorite restaurant in Clarksville!! Their beer cheese dip is so good! And their heart-attack pizza, with garlic crust is so good! If you haven't been, you should definitely go. Why wouldn't you? It's only a few blocks away from campus!!! Here's a link to the image: 7147331495_a9b0024123_o.jpg

Flikr is great! You can search for any and everything on this site!! You can search people, places, events, anything really! Signing up for an account is free and easy. And the site is easy to maneuver.
Flikr is a good tool for photo sharing. I highly recommend everyone check it out (even though we all have to for this blog) :) But, I guess what I am trying to say is I would recommend Flikr to anyone that needs a way to share photos for any reason!

Thing 6.

Ok, so my last blog post was about Web 2.0 and School 2.0. Really, it's kind of confusing to me. But for this blog we had to go to the list of online tools for Web 2.0. Guess what I found?! Pinterest! One of my favorite websites!! I started my own virtual pin board two or three years ago! Pinterest has grown so much in the past few years, I am excited to see what that website has in store for the future. I think I put in the link to go to the website. If it doesn't show up after I do this, I will try it again! Or you could just type in www.pinterest.com into your web browser and it will show right up!

Let's go over all the reasons why I LOVE Pinterest! You can pin anything!! If you like something, pin it, and you can go back later and view the website where it was originally pinned. For example, you can see a great picture of a meal that looks awesome, but you don't have time to look at the recipe right now. You can pin it, and later when you need a good meal to cook, you can look back at your pin board and click on the pin and go to the website that has the recipe for that AWESOME meal!! There are so many different categories in Pinterest: food, health, clothing, wedding, travel, and so many more!! I could really spend all day talking about Pinterest, but I don't want to bore anyone!! One thing I don't like about Pinterest is that some of the pins lead to dead links, and sometimes you have to filter your way through spam. For example, you can see a pin of a before and after picture of a woman, and the caption usually says something like "the best weight-loss method out there" and you click on it, and it goes to some random video that doesn't tell how anyone lost weight!

Pinterest could be used by educators for a variety of things. Teachers could make students go on Pinterest and look up project ideas, and students can work together in groups to come up with a project from a basic rubric given to students by the teacher. This can give students a little bit of freedom in choosing a project that might have been boring to them, but they can make it fun and creative in their own way!

Basically, Pinterest is awesome! I may be biased just because I have used it and will continue to use it. But it was one of the first tools I saw, so I found it appropriate to blog about it for this assignment! :)

Thing 5.

In my last blog post, I wrote about commenting on other blogs. The importance of commenting on other blogs is critical because it gives authors of blogs much needed feedback. In this blog post, I will discuss Web 2.0 and School 2.0.

Honestly, the whole idea of html coding confuses me!! I do, however, remember coding things on MySpace, back when it was popular! haha. But I usually asked a friend to help me, or watched videos on YouTube to discover how to do new things! To me, Web 2.0 is basically social media and tools to make life easier while using the internet. School 2.0 is how educators, parents, and students will use Web 2.0 to further education. Teachers can use technology for so many things: homework, grades, lesson materials, etc. This can mean a lot of things for schools in the future. I know since I have been in school, technology has changed so much! I heard the other day from a parent where I work (which is at a school age center) that the teacher assigns homework on the internet. The student just has to take the book home as a reference to help with homework assignments. Grades and progress reports are also being posted on a school website. Parents can go in and look and behavior that is tracked, homework assignments, and test grades. I remember having to take home everything and get it signed, but now parents can view everything online. I only wonder how much technology will advance by the time I become a teacher!

The Internet can be a complicated thing. But from the articles I just read, and the videos I just viewed, technology is there to help us. Things don't have to be as complicated as they once were. Technology is growing a lot. I just hope I can keep up!

Thing 4.

In my last blog, I discussed how I could incorporate blogging as an educator. In this blog, I will discuss how commenting is effective and important in building blogging "relationships."

Commenting helps create a sense of community and interaction by showing fellow bloggers that you are really reading what they have to say on a topic. Commenting helps someone to interact with the author about different views, agreement on topics, etc. Interaction is important because no one wants to seem like they are talking to themselves in a public journal! I found these two points in particular to be very important: Remember the power of words and invite comments. If you don't invite comments, people might not be willing to share their thoughts and give their opinions. Also, remembering the power of words is very important. Words can be so powerful. Be constructive with criticism, and just be nice. People don't like mean people. There can always be a nicer way of saying something, even if you don't agree with the author.

Thing 3.

In my last blog post, I wrote about my blogging experience, or lack thereof, and wrote a little bit of why I chose my specific avatar. I just registered my blog, so now I will be able to receive credit for completing each task in my blog!

As an educator, I could use a blog for my students, just like we are doing in this class. Students could blog about specific assignments, or maybe I could have them do a blog on extracurricular activities, to encourage students to be involved. I could also use blogging as a way of discussion outside the classroom. If students have a question on an assignment, they could respond to a blogpost and other students looking at the blog would be able to help, or I would as their teacher.

Blogging could potentially be a great way for students to keep an online journal of a certain class, or maybe even their overall school experience. I would have to keep in mind the students that do not have computer access at home. Maybe we could, as a class, use class time to go to a computer lab. I could have those students keep a handwritten journal, and then they could transfer it to their blog during class time. I think blogging could be a great way to incorporate technology into learning. As long as the tools are available for students, blogging could be a fun way of doing assignments or even keeping a journal for fun!

Thing 2.

Hey guys!!
So my last blog entry was about the 7 1/2 Habits to Lifelong Learners presentation. That was my first blog I have EVER written!! For this post, I will share with you my experience on setting up my blog and creating my avatar.

I have NO previous experience with writing my own blog. This is something completely new to me!! I never thought I would ever set up a blog and share my thoughts with you all on this process. Setting up the blog wasn't too hard for me, but I think that's only because we did it as a group, so I could follow along with Dr. Sigears and my classmates! I think if I were at home all alone, I definitely would have struggled. I was pretty creative when choosing my blog name Laura's 23 Things. I'm not too sure how my sarcasm conveys through writing, but I was being facetious when I said I was creative. I have never been confident in my creativity, so I usually am pretty original. You know the saying "think outside the box?" I always responded saying, "Here's my box. And I'm staying right here in the middle." I think this class is definitely making me think outside the box, which isn't a bad thing!!  As for reading and writing, this is probably my first experience writing. I never really kept a journal as a child or teenager. But if you read my last post, you know that I did keep a quote journal my freshman year of college!! I'm still on a search for that journal. I'm determined to find it!! As for reading other blogs, I have read a few blogs. I have some friends that do photography, and blogging is popular for the photography world. But, I think photography blogs are pretty interesting!

As for my avatar... I think she does represent me. I gave her glasses because I have terrible vision. I usually try to wear contacts, but you might see me once or twice in my glasses. She has a coffee cup in her hand because I love coffee!! I could drink it all the time, except at night.. Then I wouldn't be able to sleep very well and would have to really rely on coffee the following day. Also, my avatar has her hair up in a bun, which is how you will most always see me. I might start my day with my hair down, but it always gets in my way, so it's just easier to throw it up in a bun most days!!

I'll finish my Thing 2 blog by saying I never thought I would be here blogging, but here I am!! I look forward to blogging with my peers this semester and reading what they have to say about everything we do! :)

Thing 1.

Even a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
-Confucius

This is my first blog for EDUC 5540 class. Blogging is something completely new to me, so bare with me as I might have a rough start. I couldn't get the audio to work for the slideshow for this first blog, but I was still able to view the PowerPoint with no issues. I really enjoyed the "7 1/2 Habits of Lifelong Learners" presentation. As assigned, I will discuss my easiest and hardest habit. I started this blog with the quote from the last slide of the blog. I'm actually a really big fan of quotes. My freshman year of undergraduate school, I kept a journal with just quotes. I think I may go look for it, and see where my thoughts were during that time in my life. So, maybe I am not so new at blogging! I really like what Confucius says in his quote. Every journey must begin somewhere, which can apply to any goal in life. You just have to start somewhere; which is probably the hardest thing, actually starting!!

My easiest habit from the "7 1/2 Habits" presentation is probably Habit 1: Begin with the end in mind. I have always been a very goal oriented person. When I set my mind to something, I always accomplish my goal. I'm definitely not saying that goals haven't changed in my life. For example, 5 years ago, I never thought I would be in graduate school to become a Special Needs teacher!! However, different things in life have led me to where I am now, and nothing will get in my way of becoming an educator. I think it is very important to have an end goal. If you don't, then how does one know where they will go? Or what can be accomplished? If you set your mind to something, it's easier to set smaller goals to make it to your big goal!

My hardest habit from the "7 1/2 Habits" presentation is definitely Habit 3: View problems as challenges. If I ever come across a problem, I view it as something holding me back trying to prevent me from moving forward to achieve a specific goal. I know I need to work on changing my views sometimes, so this is something that I will definitely have to work on. If I look at problems as challenges instead of setbacks, then I will be able to overcome challenges easier than if I just viewed them as problems. Maybe I will just remove that word from my vocabulary for a while!

I am a big believer that everyone should use this approach to all aspects of life, not just with learning. This presentation has some really good advice on how to be confident with other areas in life. One might even use this presentation just to aspire to be a better person! I am looking forward to using this as a new approach to my overall outlook on life, and my outlook on education and learning.
